Stockinette stitch question

I know what stockinette stitch is. Knit one row and purl one row. I was trying the hat pattern (posted by one of the members, I can't find the link now) and it requires stockinette stitch.

I noticed that my V's are not aligned. I tried varying my tension, tried knitting loose, knitting right, but nothing seems to make a difference. The V's are unaligned is one thing and the other problem is that not all the V's are all inconsistent. One V is nice and tight and the other one is so big and has a gaping mouth. I saw a picture of an FO posted by one member and her V's are so well aligned. It looks like she drew lines and then filled in the V's all of them of the same size!

I started to make a tank top and it used stockinette stitch all along. By the time I was done with it, the whole thing was out of shape, the corners were rolled up and it stretched at one corner. I was so disappointed with it. I thought my knits and purls were not right, so I started off with a smaller and easier pattern, but looks like I can't do this either!

It hurts so much to see this :( How do I get consistent V's and how do I get them aligned? Can someone please tell me where I am going wrong and how can I correct it?

It could be your yarn; sometimes they bias and the Vs look like |/ or \| instead. Or if you're purling the wrong way you could be twisting the knit stitches.

Do you have a small picture you could post that shows what your work is like? Sometimes that helps...

I finished the hat today and it looks ok. When I look closely, I do see that the stockinette stitch is not right. I have posted a picture of the FO to show the uneven stitch. Hope someone can figure out what the problem is.

are you perhaps knitting through the back of the stitch instead of the front?

That's another thing that occurred to me last night - twisting the knit stitches.

When I first began knitting, it took me quite awhile (lots of practice) to get my tension consistent. My stockinette looked quite wonky on my first several knitted items.

You mean to say inserting the needle in the back rather than the front stitch? Yes I am. Oh boy, I was getting this wrong all the while and I didn't even realize it.

Ok, I will try again with inserting the needle into the front. I hope I get it right this time.
