Why is this pattern so hard????

I went to Paris last month and bought some bamboo yarn and a simple pattern -- it's so simple -- k 1, yarn over, knit 2 together til the last stitch, k1.

Why, oh why, if this is such a simple pattern, have I frogged the thing 5 times?

I am on my 6th attempt and I am pretty sure that I have managed to drop 2 stitches somewhere along the line and even though I cast on 32, now I have 30.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?
