need help with KP yarn subs for patterns
i posted this in the general area, but i thought maybe this would be a better section for this question..

hey all! i got a giftcard to kp for mommies day, and i'm dying to spend it. problem is, when it comes to subbing yarns, i'm horrible at it! i just don't know enough to feel comfortable making that decision on my own! so i'm coming to the knittinghelp goddesses for help!!!

so here's what i'm hoping to knit:

Green Gable and Rusted Root calls for Brown Sheep Cottong Fleece.
can i use Shine Sport or Cot Lin as replacements?

Orangina calls for Rowan 4 ply Cotton. what would i use for this one? (either KP or michael's/joann's/hobby lobby/etc)

Indigo Ripples Skirt calls for Rowan Denim. any suggestions for that one? (either KP or michael's/joann's/hobby lobby/etc)

thank you all wise and all knowing yarn sub goddesses. you are truely great!!!

Quick answer (because I'm supposed to be working on a deadline project and can't take the time to find the KnitPicks catalogue):

Go to and get the specs on all the other yarns involved.
Compare them as to weight, fiber, and gauge of the KP yarns.

If, for instance, the Shine Sport knits to a similar gauge as Cotton Fleece, it's worth a try. Order just one skein and make a swatch or three. If you get the right gauge and the fabric looks/feels nice to you, order some more and go with it.

I know you're impatient to get started (them there gift certificates just cry to be used, don't they), but it's well worth the extra time to get the right yarn for the project.
