Need help for a dunce!

Ok, I really, really want to use a specific yarn for a specific project. The project calls for 12 st per 4 with a size 10 inch needle and my yarn is 16 st per 4 inch with an 8. It is too early in the morning I guess, but should I start my gauge swatch with a smaller needle or larger to get a 12 st gauge with the 16 st yarn? Thanks everyone! (oh, I know that it is a possibility that no matter what I do it might not work, but I gotta try)

If you've got too many stitches in your gauge you go up a needle size. Not sure how many sizes up you'd need to go, it's a big differance not taking into account personal tension. I think I just go up through the sizes until I was happy.

Thanks. I am doing this one needle at a time until I can get proper gauge. Don't know if it will work, but I would really like to make this earflap hat to match the blanket I made for my grandson for Cub Scouts. Thanks again for the input.
