Temporary or Provisional CO????
I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure this pattern out. This is what the pattern says, "with crochet hook and waste yarn, loosely chain the number of sts needed, plus a few extra chains. Cut. With larger circular needle and main yarn, pick up and knit 1 stitch into the back "bump" of the first chain. Continue, knitting 1 stitch into each chain until you have the req'd number of sts. "

Can someone put this into Lehman's terms for me....or is it hopeless?

I really want to make this purse for my sister. Here's the link:

Thank you in advance!

Yes, it is a provisional cast on. If you dont like the crochet chain method you can use a different one. Amy has a video of one on the basic techniques cast on page.

I just knit a few rows with waste yarn and then proceed with the project. Although I am a crocheter, the provisional crochet cast on has never worked for me.:|

I use this method. It's done with a crochet hook, but it's not a chain.

I'm curious to see if anyone's done Amy's version using an extra circular needle as the "waste yarn". It seems super easy, and also convenient as you can use that circ to knit off of when it comes time to knit that provisional border.

I'm going to be trying it very soon to knit this hat,

so I'll let you know how it goes, Hygiene Mama!

Have a look at this article in Knitty.

Especially go down to the part that says "easy toe" This is the technique that you want to use. Good luck

I use the same CO as Jan does, but I usually crochet a few more chains before starting around the needle. I like this CO because it's easy to work off of when I'm ready to work off of it, and it doesn't leave me with a bunch of extra yarn. Also, the stitches tend to stay the right size.

Can anyone do the provisional cast on that Amy demonstrates?
The cast on Jan linked for us works ok for me. I can't for the life of me get the one Amy demonstrates so easily to work, however. It all just spins right off the needle. I must be doing something wrong, but I've sat there replaying the video and casting on along with Amy, but I just get a twist around the needle while she gets a nice cast on. I don't get it!

I agree--I just tried it and I am convinced that there is something important that is hidden or not shown well. I've been at it for 1/2 an hour and my waste and main yarn wrap around the needle instead of the waste yarn being where it should.

Amy, if you see this, can you add an addendum to the provisional cast on video? It looks like a winning technique if one can get it to work!
