Mattress stitch with reverse SS

I just finished the Latoya tank top from Berroco (great free pattern), and I'm having trouble sewing the side seams. Normally I use a whip stitch, but I guess my edge stitches were too sloppy and slippery, so the seams are not even.

I'd like to try the mattress stitch, but can't figure out how to do that since the front is reverse stockinette stitch. I'm not sure which bar to sew.

Can anyone help?

Thanks for the link - it worked perfectly! I finished the sweater during our knitting circle this afternoon, and it's ready to wear to work tomorrow.
