hat formula?
I'm making this beanie (without the brim) for this guy I like.
So I looked around to see how to make a basic one & I saw this formula:

http://www.mielkesfarm.com/bsic_hat.htm

I don't understand it, I mean right after B. Can someone give me examples of the equation?

this is the basic I'm gonna make, just a plain black color since that's what he wants:

http://www.jimmybeanswool.com/freeKn...attern_hat.asp

I'll be using size 8 needles, max size of 22" , the basic one shown above.

I tried doing the 70 sts that it says above, obviously it was too small.

You multiply your stitches per inch by the number of inches you want the hat to be. So if you want the hat to be 20 inches and your gauge is 5 stitches per inch, you cast on 100 stitches.

If you want a k2p2 border, it should also be divisible by 4. If you have a k1p1 edge, then it just has to be an even number. Once you finish the edging, ten you can add or subtract stitches to make it divisible by 10.

After you knit it for as long as you want it to be, then you can decrease according to the formula.

one more question:

do i really have to have a brim? I mean isn't ribbing at least 3 rows considered a brim?

The reason for a brim is so that your hat will not curl up on the edges, as plain stockinette stitch tends to do. If you don't mind the curling, don't do any ribbing for a brim.

Knitting is an art. If, for your weight of yarn, and your taste, three rows of ribbing is plenty, then go for it! Many people like the look of the folded ribbed brim, which is why patterns call for so many inches of it. For a beanie, you may not want a curled edge, and you may not want a folded brim, so do as many rows/rounds of ribbing that appeal to you.

There is no wrong way to knit. Do what makes YOU happy with YOUR sticks and string.
