So, I went to a yardsale today and bought a pretty colored knitted sweater for 50 cents. Once I rip this up..and check the gauge, there should be enough yarn to make a tank top...right?

There should be enough to make a sweater. As long as the seams weren't cut, you'll have as much yarn as was in the sweater originally.
