How-To: Embed YouTube & Google videos into your posts

KH Headquarters is pleased to release our newest forum feature: The ability to embed Google and YouTube videos into your posts.

Here are instructions on how to embed Google and YouTube videos into your posts at KnittingHelp.com. Within the posting editor you will notice two new icons (see attachment), one for YouTube and one for Google. Clicking them will insert in the necessary BBCODE.

Next, you will need to reference the video by editing the BBCODE. There are many ways to do this:

Simple Method:
You will need to get he unique ID code for the video. This can
usually be found at the end of the URL. For YouTube it is after the 
watch?v= and for Google it is after docid=. Simply copy and paste 
that code between the video tag...

Another Simple Method:
This just involves copy and pasting the full URL to the video
between the tags:

[GOOGLE]http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3302493280465168044[/GOOGLE]

Title Method:
And finally, if you want to include a title that will appear at the
top of the embedded player you can use a format like this:

OR 

[youtube="M6ZjMWLqJvM"]The Last Knit[/youtube]

These are embed videos so they are hosted by Google and YouTube. So we don't incur any bandwidth hits for them. This is all well and good with Google and YouTube. In fact, they encourage it as part of their viral promotion efforts.

Our own local KH videos...well that's another matter altogether and we certainly wouldn't be able to do this if we had to host them (thanks GOOGLE!). We were pushing 3,500GB (yes GIGABYTES!) of bandwidth per month during our busy season. Every winter we have to add a new server to handle the bandwidth load and all the new people who discover KH. We're up to 3 currently, although right now I think we're back down to just one. Come August we'll have to start up the others again and by the holiday season we may need to get a forth online!
