I'm thinking of trying this but row 7 and row 9 are confusing me.

Row 7: Ch3 (counts as first dc), dc in first dc (inc. made),

This is what confuses me: Where am I inserting the hook on the increase? Somewhere in that ch3, which is the first dc?

And on Row 9, it says: Ch5 (counts as tr, ch1), (tr, ch, tr) in first tr (half shell made)

Again, I just don't know where to insert the hook for that first tr, ch, tr. Somewhere in the ch5?

I really wish someone would just come to my house and show me. This is why I HATE patterns! I can't "see" sometimes and I'm a total visual learner.

I'm pretty sure they mean this:
they go right at the base of where that chain is. Usually, you move over one stitch to start a new row/ round. When you want to increase at the chain, you go into the base of the stitch where the chain starts. Hmmm does that make sense? I don't have any pics handy- put the hook right in the space at where the chain comes out, instead of the first set of loops over where you would usually start.

so for row 6, you will have the ch3 and the dc coming out of the same space
and for row 9, you will have the ch 5, tr, ch1, tr, all from the same space.

you are pretending the ch3 is a dc in row 6, and pretending the ch5 is a tr ch1 in row 9.

(it is a way to get the proper height when starting a new row or round.)

it would be the first ch of the ch 3, ch 3 is your first dc of row 7 and you will then dc in that ch. for inc. so counting ch 1 2 3... insert hook in #1... same for row 9...counting...ch 1 2 3 4 5...tr. in first ch of the ch 5...

I gave this a shot with my little standby length of yarn and think I understand what you are trying to do or this is what I understood it to be and probably would have done myself...Hey, I've been wrong before!

Double in Double

Chain 3...the 1st stitch of the 3 chain count is the stitch you are working the dc in dc increase. Count chain stitches and you will have 1 extra.


Half Shell


Chain 5...the 1st stitch of the 5 chain count is the stitch you are working the tr ch tr in to create the above pattern.

I read all the replies and I am a little concerned. Depending on what is the rest of the information for row 7 and row 9 could make a difference on where the next stitch goes. It is like the blind leading the blind. Their answer could be correct but you really need to give more information for each of the rows. Increases can be made in the same stitch but they can be made elsewhere. If placed in the wrong place the pattern can be messed up for that row and or following rows.
