I checked and it's legal in CA as long as it's 2 oz or less. DH wants to get bear spray, but I fear that might be overkill.

I will stick to the dog version and hope I never have to test it.

Oh... DH said that the dogs owner DID see him pull out his pocket knife and she had an irritated look on her face. Too bad lady, your dog is vicious! :x

An air horn works very well. It only needs to be used once with each aggressive dog. they don't forget the sudden noise. My husband has tried it with great success. Wal-Mart carries them in their party favor section. They cost about $4.

Jan, I recommend the stick, too. Many dogs will back off if you do no more than raise the stick at them, thereby relieving the need to physically harm them. If they don't, you have to be prepared to use that stick. I see many people walking around with them, as you probably do, too.

I have the same problem that Denise mentioned. Other people will innocently allow their dogs to approach mine while I'm backing off and reeling in the leash. My JRT looks really cute and has the sweetest smile, but he is NOT friendly with other dogs until he gets to know them. So when they say, "don't worry, my big dog's friendly," I have to reply with, "mine isn't. please back away." Looks like the raised hackles and throaty growl would be enough, doesn't it?

I don't really know what bear spray is, but I know I've heard/read that just general pepper spray isn't effective against (most) dogs. It doesn't have the same effect that it does on people (which is another 'benefit' for cops using dogs).

I didn't look at the dog spray too closely, but if it's got the same ingredients as pepper spray I'd doubt the effectiveness.

I have a tourquoise Blue thing called a "Pet-Agree"
its an ultrasonic sound maker
its VERY loud to a Dog, not to us, and it is directional
point it off to the side, its a lot less loud to the animal (I use it on my Mothers Dog, she is taught to come if its not loud, and to back off if it IS loud
but she does back off even from a full out running AT me (I know, I dislike untrained animals as well, but she is getting a LOT better)
