There are instructions that say

M1 (Increase 1 stitch: taking 1 stitch to create 1 more stitch, resulting in 2 stitches total) is done as follows:
1. Knit into the back of the stitch in the row below the 1st stitch on the left needle.
2. knit into the front of the 1st stitch on the left needle.

So I reached down into the back of the stitch and knit it and then into the front of the stitch and then knit it (which is very hard to do) and then I knit the stich I was going into the back and front of. THen I knit on to the next set of stitches but then I always end up with 2 more stitches then required. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I'm working on a sweater where I had to do this. It's so funny that you asked about it. I'd never done it before, either.

What I do is this.

I lift the stitch below from behind with my right tip. Basically I come up from behind the right leg of the stitch below. I found that it's easiest to just leave the stitch on the right needle, wrap my yarn, then pick up the stitch with my left point and put it over the right point. Then I knit the next stitch from the left needle. Two for one.

If that's not clear enough, I could take a picture.

I think you are knitting to many times into the stitches.

Ya know when it says "knit into the front of the 1st stitch on the left needle" I think this just means knit the next stitch like Amy does in the video. I'm knitting into the front of that stitch and *then* knitting the stitch. OY! THese instructions are veeeeery literal I guess. OK, Thanks y'all

So I emailed the desiner and she emailed me back! HEre's what she said:

Hi Lori,

1. Knit into the back of the stitch in the row below the first stitch on the left-hand needle (inserting needle point from the top down into the purled head of the stitch) --- You have just created one stitch.
2. Then knit into the front of the first stitch on the left-hand needle. This is just a normal k1 stitch you would do on the next stitch on the left needle. --- You have just created one stitch.
So... you should have created a total of 2 stitches after completing both steps #1 and #2 above.

However there are many ways to skin a cat. Here are some alternatives... :-)

OPTION 1: (k1, k1-b) into the next stitch.
1. You k1 into the next stitch, DO NOT slip the stitch off the left-hand needle...
2. Then you k1-b (knit one through the back loop) into that same stitch, then slip the stitch off the left-hand needle.
This is exactly like the Knitting Help video for "kfb", which you will find here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting...s/increase.php

OPTION 2: (k1-b, k1) into the next stitch.
1. You do a k1-b (knit one through the back loop) on the next stitch, DO NOT slip the stitch off the left-hand needle yet...
2. Now do a k1 into that same stitch, then slip the stitch off the left-hand needle
Option 2 is similar to the Knitting Help video for "kfb", except you are knitting the back loop first, and then the front loop. http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting...s/increase.php

OPTION 3: (k1, p1) into the next stitch.
1. You k1 into the next stitch, DO NOT slip the stitch off the left-hand needle...
2. Then you p1 into that same stitch. Now you can slip the stitch off the left-hand needle.

OPTION 4: K1 into the row below, then knit the stitch on the needle.
1. You k1 into the stitch in the row below the first stitch on the left-hand needle.
2. Then you k1 into the first stitch on the left-hand needle.

What does this increase look like? I'm wondering why this one over another.

Yeah the increases are very odd but then the next part of the pattern is all k1p1 and it makes the curvy part of the back of the turtle. I'll have to show you a picture later when I get home. It actually does work. I just wish there was an easier way.

I've done it before. It is knind of confusing at first but then it gets super easy.
