what does this mean?
I've got a chart for a bag and one of the instructions is
sl 1 purlwise.
what does this mean? what do i do?

insert the needle like you are going to purl the stitch, but just move it to the other needle, don't actually purl it.

Ah ok, so bring the needle in at the front but just slip it over onto the other needle.

So how would that work different from doing it knitwise? or is it different because the yarn would be in front for purlwise?

Also because slipping knitwise gives the stitch a little twist. Slipping purlwise just moves it from one needle to the other.
