Help-Cable cast-on
I've begun knitting Mary Jane booties for my new granddaughter and am sort of stumped with the pattern.

The pattern was to K9, beginning with next 2 sts bind off 21 sts, k across remaining 9 st (this includes 1 st already on r needle after the bindoff. Put first set of 9 sts on holder. Bind off all 9 stis; CUT YARN.

Rejoin jarn where you started binding off 21 sts. Cast on 12 stitches using cable cast-on method.

Now, I see where I started binding off the 21 sts, but how do I do a cable cast on in the middle of the project?

Granted, it's been a while since I've knitted anything other than a scarf and I've looked at the video, but that doesn't seem to be helping me with these booties...maybe they're reminding me too much of the felted slippers?

I'd probably pull a stitch through where I was supposed to join the yarn and do one stitch with a knitted cast on and then start my cable cast on.

For the cable cast on, you put your needle through the two previous stitches and pull a loop through and put it on the needle.

Are you supposed to end up with twelve, or thirteen, stitches on the needle?

To do the cable cast-on, you insert your needle between two stitches, then pull up a loop, placing it on the needle, then repeat.

Thanks Ingrid...you're still among the top on my list for help. So, if I'm understanding you correctly, I insert my needle where I began the initial bind off of 23 stitches and start the cast-on. Thank you too Sara. I'll probably wait til morning to conquer this one since it's now bedtime for us. Thanks to both of you.

To respond to your question about number of stitches Sara, the pattern says to Rejoin yarn where you started binding off 21 stitches. Cast on 12 stitches using cable cast-on method.

Next row-Knit across 12 new stitches and 9 from holder (21 stitches total).

Then you're golden with Ingrid's answer!

(She always gets in there before me. We need a race car emoticon. Whoooooooosh!)
