Designing a Fair Isle Sweater

Hi everyone,

I'm attempting to design my first Fair Isle sweater. I am using software I purchased call "The Sweater Wizard" for desigining the sweater itself and "Stitch and Motif Maker" for the Fair Isle pattern. The question I have is should I design the motif pattern first and then do the sweater instructions? I'm leaning toward the motif and making a swatch for the gauge. Is this correct?

I would do the motif first. You'll need to know how many stitches your pattern is for repeats so you can make them begin and end in the right places in relation to the sweater design.
