my first scarf!

hey everybody
that's my first thread...first question..and my first project!(a scarf)

so my yarn says I should use size 5 needles... and im doing it just a simple garter stitch scarf..as a starting project..to kindda learn in it..
now the needles I have are either size 4 or size 6.5..and since it's a scarf I'm assuming I should use the 6.5..
or is that still too small??

I really can't wait till I go out and buy new ones! lol

Are you talking mm's? There isn't a 6.5 needle that I know of, in mm's or American numbers.

A 5 needle is 3.75 mm.

In any event, I'd use your bigger needle for garter stitch.

A 6.5mm is a US size 10.5 so yes, she could use that for a scarf; would be slightly open and lacey and great in garter st.

I'm finally doing some progress..

I'll attach pics..
but I have a question..

the scarf is done with 2 knits 2 purls pattern..and even though it's a skinny scarf..it's turning out waay to skinny cuz i guess k2p2 makes it smaller...so will blocking make it a bit bigger?? the yarn is "75% akrilic 25% yun"

so I'm assuming that 75% acrylic and 25% wool(?)..

Pat yourself on the back for a good job!

That will look pretty.

However, the pattern you are using (k2p2) is a rib pattern and rib patterns are notorious for pulling in and being elastic. That's what ribs are meant to do and that's why they are great for collars, cuffs and the bottoms of sweaters.

I don't think you will be able to block it any wider than it is already because of all the acrylic in the yarn you are using. It needs to be a natural fiber to really block. Otherwise it will just pull back to it's original shape.

If you are really bugged about the width you might want to consider starting over with more cast on stitches. Frogging your work (rip-it, rip-it) is part of the learning experience for even the most seasoned of knitters. We have all had to do it at some time or another.

But if you are ok with the way the scarf is coming out, knit on.

OMG no way! lol I had to rip a few rows a couple of time..I'm not doing it to my purty purty scarf! hehe

I don't mind it..I'll love my first scarf no matter how it looks like! my sister keeps telling me I'm acting like the scarf is my baby..

Long, skinny scarves seem to be popular recently. I'd probably keep it the way it is (unless it's way too skinny) and just make the scarf a nice long length.
