can you use a variegated yarn for a basketweave pattern?

I have never knitted with basketweave before and am wondering if the pattern shows up as nicely using a variegated yarn. Would you recommend using a solid color instead? Thanks for the input!

I made 2 basketweave scarves, both in a twisted 4 color yarn (not variegated). the stitch pattern shows up if you look real close. honestly, I think it's best in a solid.
