Kitchener Stitch Question
I am making a monogramed baby blanket, and I am knitting 4 squares on the diagonal and piecing them all together into a square. My q is-

How can I sew the horizontal pieces together when I knit the squares on the diagonal? I don't have live stitches on the needles across the top (BO) row, because the pieces were knit on the diagonal. How can I piece them together seamlessly? I can do mattress stitch for the vertical joins, but what can I do on the horizontal joins?

I see no one has replied to this question. Can you share a picture of what you mean. I'm not picturing it very well myself. We'd like to help, if we can.

I can't quite picture it, either.

If you have 4 squares, then I'd think you could mattress stitch all the edges together. You'll have a seam, though. I can't think of a way to seamlessly connect them.

I am sure that you are all familiar with knitting on the diagonal-

CO 3 sts

Kfb, K1, Kfb
P across row
Kfb, K to last st, Kfb
P across row
Increase in this fashion until piece is as wide as you want
SSK, K to 2 sts left, K2tog
P across row
Continue in this fashion until 3 sts left, BO

If you look at the piece as it was knit, you would have a diamond. I am using them as squares, and piecing all 4 of these together to make a large square. I couldn't figure out how to sew the horizontal pieces seamlessly.

Hope that clarifies it. I haven't actually knit yet, just in the swatch and charting stage, so I don't have pics yet.

Thanks!

That's what I pictured, but I wasn't sure about your seams. I envision two seams on each diamond, right? Mattress is the only nice seam I can think of for those edges. It will work on the diagonal edge.

You could also see how it looks to pick up stitches, but you'd still have a seam where you picked them up.

I have been thinking this over, and now I'm not even sure if I can do mattress st on the pieces. Since they were knit on the diagonal, when put side by side to sew, the sts are all on the diagonal. Is it even possible to do mattress st and have it turn out correctly? I must make time for swatches and check this out. Has anyone ever done pieces on the diagonal, then tried to sew together as a square? I am so confused

Thanks for any advice!
