Purl 1, slip 1 with yar in back INSANITY

I am making a very basic bunny from Lion Brand patterns and it has been fairly easy to do up until the pattern asked me to: *Purl 1, slip 1 with yarn in back; repeat from * across row.
It says that the head is made using double knitting to create a double thickness of fabric that can be stuffed. I get the idea but my bunny head keeps coming out solid. Should I just do this in the round on dpn's? Any help will be greatly appreciated as Lion Brand just told me to "Follow the directions".

After you slip the stitch with the yarn in back, you bring the yarn to the front to purl the next st. Do this across the row, you'll be slipping half the stitches. On the next row, you'll work the stitches you slipped and slip the ones you purled. After a few rows, you'll see that this method makes a little `pocket' that will grow into a tube that you can stuff for the head.
