Has anyone "done" route 66?
Just looking for input from people who have done all or parts of route 66 from Illinois to Arizona. I'm (crazily) thinking of driving to Arizona sometime this winter (so I can bring my pups) and thought it might be fun to do at least some of the historic route along the way. Any tips, info, fun places you've been along the way?

wasn't part of Alton Brown's TV show Feasting on Asphalt filmed partly on Rt 66? (the original series). I don't think he did the whole thing, but I bet his trip stopped at a few good places to eat.....

Mary, I was wondering the same thing when I saw this thread .. I wonder if Alton highlighted it? Well I missed show or two in the last series .. but knowing him, I bet he said something about it.

(On a side note, the sound guy is from Wisconsin, and when they did a wine tasting in Illinois - Alton had to make a crack about how we have a higher tolerance. What a wiseguy - although he is right .. )

I love Alton...but I didn't see the first feasting on asphalt. I'll see if I can find some reruns

the website for the Food Network does have a link to the original series (Feasting on Asphalt 1) - The interface is a little fussy for me (couldn't effectively link) but he does list the restaurants he visited and shows a map. (Episodes 3 and 4 I think)

(I love FoodTV! AB is one of my all time favorites. he just cracks me up all the time.)

I was on part of Rt66 in Arizona, but it was a loooong time ago- all I remember was a truck stop. maybe its better now!

Nope, but I'd love to! Now I've got the song in my head . . . . .

You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New mexico,
Flagstaff, arizona.
Dont forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San bernandino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
When you make that california trip
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

A part of it runs through St. Louis near Washington University where my son goes to school. That little stretch is nice but thats the extent of my knowledge.

Ugh. I just moved from a town that Rt. 66 ran through (Tucumcari, NM). I've traveled back and forth between Amarillo, TX and Cali more times than I can even count and right now, I'm drawing a total blank. But check out this site for weird, quirky stuff to see.
