Garnstudio Directions Question
I am making a cardigan sweater for a child. The pattern creates a collar by increasing along the button hole edge. As you are creating this collar the pattern states the following:

When piece measures 45 cm. cast off outermost 17 sts for shoulder and continue in stocking sts over remining 15 sts as follows:
*2 rows garter sts over all sts, 2 rows garter sts over only the outermost 9 sts.* repeat from *-* until collar measures 5.5 cms.

What does that portion in red mean?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Jenny

Those instrucions are confusing. Could it mean the center 9? That would make more sense. If you did the outermost 9 on each edge, that would be 18. It could be that they would overlap in the center.

Hard to tell.

Is it for the back or the fronts? If it's for one of the fronts, then `outermost 9' of 15 sts would make sense.

Of course. That never occurred to me!

Ok, if it is the outer most 9 what do I do with the other 6 sts (since there are 15 total)?

It says to repeat between the *'s until 5.5 cm, so you knit two rows of all the stitches, then knit the 9 edge stitches for two rows, then knit all, the end, etc, until you get to the right length.

Thanks for your help. I think the reason it is that way is to make a curve in the collar around the neck too.

Yes, that's how short rows work.
