I'm knitting a scarf thats all garter stitch and I noticed that when I knit the first stitch its always loose. Im not sure what I did but I tried to purl it and it didnt work and I tried to knit it tighter and that didnt work either. I even tried knitting the one stitch twice and none of it worked. What do I do? Her are some pictures:
The end stitch is always loose because it's not attached on one side. If you knit the first couple of stitches of the next row tightly, it should wrap around the needle a bit and tighten up.
Or for a neat edge on a scarf, slip the first stitch of every row and knit the last one of every row.

What I do for firm edge stitches is, knit the first stitch, insert the needle in the second stitch, and stop. Give the yarn a tug, and knit the second stitch. It will tighten right up.
I agree with Ingrid. Just slip the first stitch of every row. It's faster and easier to remember. And easier for those of us who knit sans looking and get caught up in a really spooky horror movie!

I actually do what deadringer does, but I have also read authors who say you must pay attention to the last 3 or 4 stitches of the previous row AND the first 3 or 4 stitches of the new row. That is, work the last 3 or 4 of a row "on the loose side" and the first 3 or 4 of the new row "on the tight side".
Try everything, and see what works for you. What I know for a fact, though...if you focus only on that loose stitch, and don't change how you're working the other stitiches, you'll never solve the problem.

Its still loose, but Im now accepting that its going to be loose and just ignoring it. When I slip the first stitch and knit the last, it does look neater and really, the loose stitch just annoys me more than it hurts the scarf. If anyone else has and other ideas, I'd be glad to try them but Im not going to fret about it anymore.
