Different weight yarn

I want to make the zebra on page 96 of World of Knitted Toys. The pattern calls for DK weight yarn and size US 2 needles-no gauge given.

I want to use Caron Simply softr, worsted weight yarn. I noticed that the normal needle size for DK yarn is US 4-6, but am guessing the smaller needles are to keep the stuffing from showing.

If I use a smaller needle than normal for worsted will I be okay? I don't care about the size, as long as I don't throw the proportions off too much.

If you don't care about size, then any needle that gives a firm fabric will work. As you stated, the smaller needles insure the stuffing won't show!
