I Have a Turtle (Tortoise?)....Now What????
I rescued this little guy off a major road today, cars going by at 55 mph.

He's the smallest one I've seen around these parts......I have an area with trees just off my patio which I would like to make a little habitat for him/her..............I'm calling her Fiona for now ........DH doesn't agree with name, so is trying to come up with a better one.

So now what??????????? Any tortoise owners out there???? Tips please!

Wait...are you planning on keeping him? Reptiles are hardy things, you could probably just turn him loose if you wanted.

Check to see if it's legal to keep it. I know around here there's a few tortoise varieties that are illegal to have. I'd just let it go, he'll be more happy in his own little world doing what he does best.

I'm considering it. Although I'd like to do it somewhere where there is less traffic.......I'm ALWAYS stopping to save these little guys.

Check with your local animal rescue-to make sure it is indiginous and not an import-that's where the legal thing come in. Maybe someone lost their turtle. Or maybe there is a turtle rescue program.

someone once left a red-eared slider on my doorstep (and i know it didn't get up there on its own, turtles don't climb stairs), and i was able to locate a turtle rescue organization - one of its members came and took the turtle. i would check first to see if that tortoise is native to your area - if it is, find a good spot and let it go - if not, try a turtle rescue - even if you decide not to give it to them, but to keep it, they will have good advice on diet and housing.

Here's some info about the three types of tortoises in the US. It does say that the Texas tortoise cannot be removed from it's habitat if that's indeed what it is.
