Joining sleeve to sweater body?
Hi,

"Newbie" Laurie W. asking a question--my first of probably many!!
I'm trying to understand instructions that tell me I can work the last stitch of each row of my sleeve into the armhole edges of the sweater body AS I KNIT THE SLEEVE to make a very smooth seam. Apologies, if this is not clear, but I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice, or direct me to a location explaining the process.

In way of introduction, I've been an "occasional" knitter for years, not too experienced, usually attempting things perhaps a bit challenging for my skills.
I'm married to John, decoy-carver, flytyer, fly fisherman and more, for 44 years !!! We have 3 grown daughers and 7 superb grandchildren.
I'm soooo looking forward to retirement from my day job next February and anticipate realizing a dream to become a certified quilt appraiser. I love all textiles, but especially the scrumptious feel of wool.
Hope someone can give me guidance.
Laurie W. waving from NW Pennsylvania

Welcome Laurie!

Sorry, that really isn't very clear... Could you type in a few lines of the pattern so we know how it's worded? And what kind of sweater is it - how is it constructed? That way we can understand it better.

Thanks for your reply, Here is quote from directions which I can't seem to grasp. The shoulders are sewn together. I'm not clear on which stitches to pick up.
"Right side facing you pick up 66 stitches. Work a purl rib to match the rib on the yoke. Reverse of the garment knit all the way across. Right side of the garment: purl. Reverse of the garment: purl. You are now back to the right side of the garment. Begin the same stitch you used for the yoke. Right side of garment: *p3,k1. Repeat from *. On the reverse of the garment: knit all the way across.
When I do a sleeve that is set into an armhole indent, I attach it to the sides of the indent as I work. When you get to the edge, work the last stitch into the body. The sleeves and the body will form a smooth edge."
Thanks for any help

I assume that you bound off the stitches on body, the part that forms the indent. As you knit to the end of the right side row, stop before you work the last stitch. Transfer this stitch to the right hand needle. Pick up one stitch with your working yarn from the body with right needle. Return both stitches to the left needle and knit them together. Work the wrong side row and do the same when you get to the other end. Continue until you finish knitting up all the stitches in the area of the indent.

Thank you Lillian. I think I understand your directions. Perhaps I should get the front and back blocked so I can begin the sleeves. I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Hopefully, this will all make more sense when I'm actually ready to do it. I'm sure I'll have more questions then.
Can you recommend a basic "how to" knitting book that may help this novice? I need to how to block correctly, knit better cables and learn all the special methods that give an "expert" look. I've been knitting off and on for years, but primarily afghans, scarves and "neck down" one piece sweaters. Obviously I have a lot to learn!
