Where did I go wrong?

I casted on 45 stitches and did 8 rows of ribbing. From there I alternated K and P, increasing one on rows 11 and 14. Pattern reads to repeat 9-14 until you have 58 stitches. Where I should have had 50 I already had 58! Where did I go wrong? Is it ok to keep going? (Gosh I hope so; I've done 40 rows!)

I'm making pants for my daughter (6m). Is this going to matter when I seam the other half of the pants to this one?

I'm a new knitter, can you tell?

Ok so you increased too many times.. lets break the instructions down:
casted on 45 stitches

work 8 rows of ribbing

now your question becomes unclear:
From there I alternated K and P, increasing one on rows 11 and 14.
then:
Pattern reads to repeat 9-14 until you have 58 stitches.
Where I should have had 50 I already had 58! Where did I go wrong?

So the pattern starts at Row 9, Increases at row 11 and row 14, and then repeats again from row 9?

Canyou tell use What are the directions? (not what you did!)
If you start with 45 and make pairs of increases (either 1 or 2 in rows 11 and 14 (either way!) you should end up with an odd number (NOT AN EVEN ONE!)

That alone made me question your process/understanding of the instructions (which might very well be poorly written, or contain a mistake)-- making it very difficult for you to follow the instuctions and come out right!

if you are supposed to increase at BEGINNING and END of each row, you'll reach 58 faster (few rows) then if you are supposted to increase ONLY at beginning (OR END) of row.

and the shape will change too..

three options.

.../........\ Increase on each end of rows 11 and 14)

...|......| (ribbing)
...|.......\ (increase only(at beginning of row 11 and 14)

...|......| (ribbing)
../........\ (increase once (beginning of row 11, end of row 14)

the last image looks the same as first but in reality, the slope of the slanted line would be softer (less slopey, straighter)

If you are knitting a sleeve the shaping should be like top or (MORE LIKELY, bottom, NOT MIDDLE (bolded example)

But some sweater parts are asymmetrical (like a surplus or crossed front of WRAP sweater. -these might be shaped like the middle (bold example)

to REALLY answer the question, more info is needed!

unfortunately frogging (un raveling) and redoing is a part of the knitting process!

40rows-8ribbing=32 divided by the # of rows in the repeat (6)=5+2extra. 45+5=50. plus 2 extra rows. Maybe you acidently created yo's.

The pattern --

Cast on 45 stitches with two tail method (note if this cast-on is new to you, please watch the free video at http://www.fiberartshop.com/knclbg.htm)
Row 1 (waist ribbing): *K2, P1* repeat from * to * (last stitch of row will be purl).
Row 2 (waist ribbing): *K1, P2* repeat from * to * (last two stitches of row will be purl).
Rows 3 through 8 (waist ribbing): alternate rows 1 and 2 above
Row 9 knit across
Row 10 purl across
Row 11 knit across, then add one stitch at the end of the row (increase one stitch total this row).
Row 12 purl across
Row 13 knit across
Row 14 purl across, then add one stitch at the end of the row (increase one stitch total this row).
Repeat rows 9 through 14 until you have 58 total stitches on your needle.
Continue in stockinette (alternate knit and purl rows) until you have approximately 68 rows, or until garment measures 9 inches in total height.

It looks like I may have yo in a two spots. Also, I know I increased 1 at the end of the row but the work jumps over 2 rows. Maybe I just need to review increasing.

These are just practice anyways
