I am a newbie knitter and I am confused about how I would know which side is wrong or right before I begin knitting.
I have a pattern that begins with knitting on rs, how would I begin??
Cast on the stitches you need. If the pattern says something like,
Row 1 (RS) blah, blah, blah....just follow the directions for row 1. It's just telling you that that's the right side.

Once you have cast on your stitches, and you start to knit, the first row you knit is the RS (right side). I usually take a small scrap of yarn and slip it into a stitch on the RS of the knitting but I do NOT tie a knot. I just make two loops and tie a bow. This way I always know at a glance which is the RS and which is the WS. It is easily removed once the piece is finished being knit.
