Truly Stupid Question. (Takes the Cake for said category)
K4, P4 across. (Row 1)
K the K st and P the P st. (Row 2)

Okay, since the back of a purl is a knit, when I start Row 2, it looks like I should be knitting. But if that was the case, wouldn't the pattern just be Row 1, repeat? And if not, why doesn't the pattern read:
Row 1 K4, P4 across
Row 2 P4, K4 across

It depends on the width.

k4,p4 in a multiple of 8 would be k4,p4 on the next row, too.

If you start with a k4 and end with a k4 for balance, then you'd have to start with a p4, k4, and end with a p4.

Knit the knits and purl the purls covers every possibility.
