help understanding a pattern
Hi to all forum members!

I'm trying to figure out a lace pattern, and I've got stuck. The pattern is here:

http://www.heirloom-knitting.co.uk/o...wers_scarf.pdf

There's a chart, and at the bottom it all makes sense until it says this:

"Keep edging stitches on RH needle and with casting on tail on LH side, pick up from straight edge 85 sts - that's 6 per point and 1 extra. Pick up 13 stitches from Knitting Cast On to form new RH edging side."

Can anyone enlighten me? Does it mean I should cast 85 stitches with the cast-on tail, plus 13, then start the pattern from the bottom right corner?

Help!!

It looks like you knit the left hand edging first. Then pick up 85 stitches down the straight edge of that. You don't do it with the tail, they're just telling you where the tail should be when you pick up stitches so you do it on the correct side.

After you pick up the 85, it says to pick up stitches where you cast on. I'm honestly not sure how that will work to make the right hand edge. It would help if there was a picture.

I had understood that I knit the first row of the LH edge first. But what does "pick up" 85 stitches mean? There aren't 85 stitches to pick up! What does "6 per point" mean?

*confused*!

To see how to pick up stitches, check out the video here:

You pick them up down the long side. 6 X 14 points = 84 + 1 = 85

Ah! Great! Those tutorial videos are just brilliant!

But I'm still confused, I'm afraid. It says "cast on 13 sts". Then I turn and knit back the way the first row of the LH edging, making 14 sts on my needle. Does it mean I should "pick up" 6 sts into every one of those? Seems impossible.

Perhaps I don't understand "knit edging pattern for 14 complete points". Does "points" mean "rows"?

Still got my learner plates on...

I read it as the 'points' being the completed point on the edge of the scarf--12 rows worth.
