dye roving or spun yarn?
I can't wait to start dying my own yarn. Do you prefer dying the unspun roving, or the completed yarn?

Are there drawbacks to either one? I'll probably to both and experiment, but just curious to see what everyone else does!

For a multi colored yarn, either way will result in a different effect in the finished yarn. If you dye before you spin, the colors will be more blended in the finished yarn. Whereas if you dye after you spin, the color will stay right where you put it.

If you're dying a single color, just save some trouble and dye after you spin it.

dyeing roving multi-colors can be a bit trickier - what looks wonderful in the roving can end up pretty muddied looking in yarn (but spinning multiple colors is a treat!)
Color in Spinning by Deb Menz is a wonderful reference book
