A distaff is a tool used to hold the fiber for spinning.

traditionally it's a staff used for holding wool or flax, usually flax, for spinning but nowadays people make and use wrist distaffs which are basically bracelets withs beads and whatnot that can be used to tuck roving into so it stays out of the way when spinning.
