I just picked up an afghan pattern book at Michaels.
Sampler afghans, 60 easy to knit pattern stitches. Pick your stitch patterns and knit blocks and crochet together. Is that what you meant. The booklet is put out by Leisure Arts.

There is a book/project called "The Great American Aran Afghan". That may be what you're thinking about. If you have access to Ravelry, check under my name (Scubasinger there, too) and you'll see some photos of a few squares I've done on this project. I'm currently working on square #9 of 24

Could you be thinking of the episode on KnittyGritty on DIYNetwork about the Aran Patchwork Afghan (http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/shows_...6324,00.html)? It's a pattern for an Aran afghan that is made up of squares with different patterns.
