How do I 'make' a pattern?

Since some family members found out I knit they have requested personalize stockings. Problem is they have some that a Great Grandma knitted for them YEARS ago. But she didn't knit one for any of the spouses. So know they want me to knit them each one. (5 in total, yuck) But they all want it to 'match' their exsisting stockings.

I have aquired the stockings, but need to figure out how to duplicate it. I've never 1) made a pattern, 2) made a 'sock' 3) done color changes. Boy am I in trouble. Plus Christmas is right around the corner and I'm not sure I can get them done.

I have looked at the stockings and did a 'rough draft' of the pattern, but will need more details for the tree, candle, name and wreath that are knitted into it.

Any ideas?

Well, depending on how big the motifs are you could always duplicate stitch them.
If it were me, I'd just check the gauge of the stockings (hopefully it's not too small!) And you could probably just count stitch by stitch to copy the motif. But that would probably take a long time. You could take a close up picture of the motif and enter it into Knit Pro to help you create a chart.

As for a basic stocking pattern, there are a lot of them listed in the Christmas section of Knitting Pattern Central, maybe you can find something there?

There are tons and tons of free knit stocking patterns online. Maybe use one of the patterns for practice then go from there. Hopefully they are not all expecting them to be made this christmas!
