Newbie question about pattern

Hi Folks
I'm brand new to this forum, and although I knitted when I was younger (much younger!), I've done mostly crochet. Now I'm back to knitting again, and have a question regarding a hat pattern I've been working on. This is the third attempt at this and I'm about to give it up and go back to crochet!:

The pattern reads as follows:

Shape Crown
1st row--*K5, K2tog: rep from * to end (66 ) stitches
2nd and every alt row-K
3rd row--*K4, K2tog: rep from * to end (55)sts.
Continue dec thus on every alt row until 22 sts remain.

The last sentence has me really confused. Do I continue to Knit 4 between dec? Or 3, then 2? Or maybe 5 one row and 4 the next?

Any suggestions???

Every other row will be plain knit, like row 2 of what's written out for you, and the alternate rows will be decrease rows with one less knit before the k2tog on each decrease row. So the next decrease row will be K3, K2tog repeated around, then next decrease row K2, K2tog repeated around, etc., always with a plain knit row in between, until you reach 22 stitches.
