Circular knitting question! Please help!

Hi! I just got my first set of circular needles and wanted to make a scarf with vertical stripes with them. Well I've made about 5 rows so far, but I'm realizing that I'm just making a huge tube - I'm not really making a scarf. I followed the video directions on this site, but it never really says how to make a flat scarf - or if that's even possible. I've seen a lot of patterns for scarves with horizontal stripes that definitely have ends! I really want to know how to do that before I take apart what I've done so far. Any help would be great! You definitely can make a flat piece with circulars. What you need to do is cast on all of your stitches and then start your row with the stitch that has the working yarn as the first stitch (nearest the needle tip) on the left needle. Then use the empty right needle tip to start knitting. When you get to the end of the row, turn your work around and proceed as above, always starting with the working yarn on the left needle tip.
