Joining earflaps on a hat
I have a question about reading a pattern that is joining earflaps to a hat.

The pattern reads...

with the second flap, take the 16" circular needle, k 3, p 15, k 3, then a the end of this row, cast on 18 sts.

Take the first flap, and work across as follows - k 3, p 15, k3.

Next row - k 1, inc, k until 3 sts are left, inc, k 2.
Next row - k 3, p 16, k 24, p 16, k 3.
Next row - k to end of row, cast 32 sts, joine work into a round, p 3, place a marker on the right needle tip.

So what I had was one ear flap on a dp needle and the yarn cut. The second flap is on a dp needle with the yarn still attached. I took the circular needle and did the k 3, p 15, k 3, then immediately cast on 18 more sts. First is this right? I wasn't sure what they meant by the end of this row.

Second, now I have one earflap on the circular needle with 18sts cast on, how do I attach the second earflap which is still on one of the dp needles?

And where in this sequence does the pattern finish the first row of the hat so that it forms a continuous circle? Is it actually elongating the back of the hat so it comes down sooner?

Please help, I'm stuck.

I think you work the 1st flap, CO 18 sts, work across the sts of the 2nd flap. You may go back and forth a couple rows. But for sure, this row...
" Next row - k to end of row, cast 32 sts, join work into a round, p 3, place a marker on the right needle tip."

... is where you CO more stitches then join to work in the round.

Hi. This is slightly different from the one earflap hat I've made. However, it looks like suzeeq is right - after attaching the first flap, you work back and forth a couple of rows. That will make the back of the hat come down a little further than the front - nice! Wish I had thought of that with mine.

For attaching that first flap off of the DPN, just pick up the DPN with that flap in your left hand*, continue with the circular needles in your right* and knit right across the DPN in the pattern given k 3, p 15, k3. Voila, it's now attached.

* Of course, if you're left-handed, reverse the hands.
