Waste Yarn - Help with Son of Stitch 'n Bitch Smokin Jacket

Hi!
I'm attempting to knit a cardigan from Son of Stitch 'N Bitch. I finished the bottom edge and the next instruction says "K to last 8 stitches and place those onto wy." I'm not really sure what this means. I'm thinking I'm dropping the 8 stitches cuz I will need them to make the button hole/button edges. Do I just put them onto some waste yarn? It doesn't seem like they will be able to be reattached to the rest of the garment. Thanks for any help.

Yes, just put them on waste yarn. I suspect that you'll knit the band separately and have to sew it on later. Check further along in the pattern and see what you have to do with those 8.

i did look ahead . . . . but not far enough! "Finishing: Sew button bands and collar to sweater body. . . . "
