How to soften yarn?

Hi,
I am going to be making a sweater for my mom. It is a long story, but I do like the pattern, but not the yarn. I'm stuck with the yarn. It is "Legend" by Artful Yarns 83%wool and 17% nlyon.

Is there some way I can soften the yarn? I thought I had read somewhere that you can wash it and then rinse it in hair conditioner or something.

Washing it should soften it up some. I'm not sure about the conditioner although I do think I've heard something like that before, too.

I made a vest several months ago, and I thought the yarn was sl. "scratchy", so, I used a small amount of fabric softner when I washed it and it did soften it. My yarn was all acrylic.

Yes, use hair conditioner. And shampoo. They are products made to wash protein based fibers (your hair) so they wor wonderfully on wool and other protein fibers like silk.

I used Eucalan woolwash on a wool/nylon FO (and rinsed it gently) and was amazed at how soft it came out.
