knit into front and back?

Hi all,

My instructions say "knit into front and back of next st" and later tell me to "turn." What do these mean please? It's for a two needle baby booties and hat pattern...

The kfb (knit into front and back) is an increase and turn means to turn as if you're at the end of the row, even if there's still stitches left. For a video on kfb, look in the Increases section under `bar increase'.

So, to "turn" the work means I'm going to switch my left needle to my right hand and vice versa, and then continue to knit even though the working yarn is coming from the left needle?

Also, thanks so much for pointing me towards that video - it's really helpful, and not how I'd pictured it at all! :o)

Sort of. You would be working on the stitches you just made, while letting the others rest on the needle. What's the next step of the pattern? Does it say to purl or are you knitting in garter stitch?

When you get to the end of the row and turn, swapping the hands the needles are in, the working yarn is coming off the left needle too. In this case, there's still sts left on the right needle instead of it being empty.

The pattern around where it wants me to turn goes as follows: Row1: Sl 1 from left to right needle, turn, p1, k2, p2, k2. Row 2: Sl 1, turn, p1, k2 and so on...it just seems odd to have the working yarn from the right needle become working yarn from the left needle...I guess I should just try it and see?

Yep. A lot of things that are hard to see in your head make perfect sense when you follow step by step with the yarn and needles.

You are, in essence, doing the same thing as if you knitted a complete row. Think about it this way - when you've finished knitting all of the stitches off your left needle, you switch your needles around so you can start the next row. Before you work that very first stitch the working yarn is on the left needle. So just pretend that you knitted all the stitches (even though there will be some left on the needle) and go from there.

Hi. I'm new to knitting and just encountered this. I did a search on You tube (knitting back and front) and I got a great video that demonstrates this. Check it out. I don't have the link on me, but it was easy to find. It really helped.
