If you're looking for a light yarn, Coats and Clarks, TLC Cotton Plus is nice. It's around $2.70 a skein, 178 yards. It is a dk/medium weight, which works up nicely on size 8s and the blend is 51% cotton, 49% acrylic. It's a smooth yarn and washes beautifully. Mary

I'd also opt for a blend...the Cotton Plus is very nice. 100% cotton can get VERY heavy if the afghan is sizeable.
