Sideways cables
I'm new to knitting and I know this is way above my pay grade but if I don't ask while it is on my mind my cat will hide it.

I'm into wearing kilts and since I need kilt hose (knee high socks) with a larger calf size that commercially available I decided to start knitting my own. So far it is Knit 1 purl 2 drop 4 but I am getting better.

I saw and example of kilt hose where the knitter was knitting toe-up and when she came to the cuff at the top turned her needles 90 degrees and knit the cuff sideways to the rest of the hose. this seems to be an easier way, once you turn the needle, to knit the cables on the cuff. Does anyone know how this is done and it there is some guidance on the web?

I just googled 'sideways cabled cuffs' and ended up on this site, where I found a discussion about kilt hose, and this information:

the book 'Designs for Knitting Kilt Hose and Knickerbocker Stockings' by Veronica Gainford has instructions for a couple of cable band cuffs.

By the way, don't decide something is out of your league just because you're new! Knitting is basically just different combinations of the two basic stitches, and there are tons of helpful people here if you get stuck.

I'm part of that discussion and going to get the book. X-marks is a forum for men and women that wear kilts. There is a growing number of hose knitters on the site and is where the sideways knitter lives.

Being way above my pay grade simply means that it will take a few days to figure out how to do it. It is also to warn people to talk v..e..r..y s..l..o..w..l..y s..o t..h..e n..e..w g..u..y w..i..l..l b..e a..b..l..e t..o u..d..e..r..s..t..a..n..d

doing a horizontal cable for a cuff is very similar to knitting on a perpendicular border to a shawl. Once you do it it is so easy and makes so much sense - but sometimes it's hard to describe what you do in words.

LOL how funny that I ended up posting something you are already on, sorry about that!

Here is a pattern for a shawl that has a horizontally knit garter border across the top. If you scroll down and read those instructions, and substitute a cable pattern for the garter, this may help you figure out how to do it.

Don't be sorry your intent was to help and you had no way of knowing.

Just remember - real men wear kilts and the best of these knit their own hose.

Absolutely! I lived in Scotland briefly, and I really miss it.
