Maggie Righetti in her book Knitting in Plain English suggests using double pointed needles on size larger than the needles being used for knitting. She says that this is to keep the DP from slipping out. I'm new so .. I have found that this slight increase in size also helps me the stretching of the stitch in making the cable is easier and stitch shrinks in the cable.
2 cents from a newbie.
