I took this pattern from knitqueen and made it without the cables.

I'm happy with these. This is my third pair, but the first two pairs were made with funky thumbs...this pair, specifically the second mitt of this pair, was made with this link. I'm not quite done, but so far, the instructions have been much easier than picking up stitches.
