Is it possible to cast on more than one color?
Hi,

I am making a US flag afghan that I want to do color changes in rather than sew sections together. Is it possible to cast on with more than one color? Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can. You'll need a strand for each stripe and use the knitted or cable cast-on.

Wouldn't it be easier to knit it in the other direction, though?

Then you could make the stripes horizontally and use one color at a time. Otherwise you'll have 13 strands of yarn to contend with.

Thanks
Ingrid,

Thank you for replying to my post. After I submitted it my brain began to work and I realized that all I need to do is start at the bottom with the last red stripe instead of the top. I feel very foolish, but when I'm in a hurry, I don't always stop and truly analyze what I am looking at.

Thanks Again

yes, and you can use several different cast on's

long tail offers several way to do multi color cast ons

Method 1-
tie two yarns together (make a slip knot, (but don't count this double yarn slip knot as a stitch)

make 1 normal long tail
make 1 reversed long tail
(reversed long tail= pivot needle to index finger -stitch needle into "loop of yarn' on that finger, then pick up yarn on thumb, then back out of index finger loop, and drop yarn from index finger --
(the same motion as making a standard long tail, only you start at index finger (see it here on you tube)

Method 2
tie two yarns together (make a slip knot)

use both yarns(held together) to cast on--cast on 1/2 desired # of stitches MAKE SURE TO CAST ON LOOSELY or Use a larger needle for cast on) Use Long Tail cast on

row 1 Knit into stitch yarn color A with yarn A, Purl into stitch color B and purl (or knit) with yarn B (make 2 stitches from each stitch cast on..)

Method 3
Braided cast on.

tie two yarns together (make a slip knot, (but don't count this double yarn slip knot as a stitch)

make 1 normal LONG TAIL cast on (say yarn a is on thumb, yarn B on index)
first stitch on needle is yarn B

*as you tighten up first cast --MOVE YARNS

Yarn A get moved forward and UP (to index finger)
Yarn B gets rotated down and back (to thumb)

Make 1 normal long tail cast on
second stitch on needle is yarn A

as you tighten up first cast --MOVE YARNS

Yarn B get moved forward and UP (to index finger)
Yarn A gets rotated down and back (to thumb)

repeat, (again and again) cast on will be A B A B A B A B
(cast on edge will look braided.

this last cast on can be done with 2, 3, 4 or 5 yarns! just leave the unused yarns hanging! and work in same order (12345, 12345,)

and there are other methods! (crochet cast, for one more!)
