Beginner to cabling (is that a word?)
Here is the pattern:

Woven Cable Stitch:

Multiple of 4:

Row 1: *Cable 4 front; rep from* to end
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K2, *cable 4 back; rep from* to lasr 2 sts, K2
Row 4: Purl

repeat these 4 rows.

Question: the first row says cable 4 front. If you cable 4 front what am I doing with the next stitch? same question for row 3 (cable 4 back then what?) do I knit the next 4 stitches?

Please help

When a cable pattern says `cable X front/back' that's the total number of sts. So you would put 2 sts on the cable needle, hold in front, knit the next 2 sts, then the 2 from the cable needle - a total of 4 sts. You work every stitch on row 1 as part of a cable. On row 3 you work every st as part of a cable except the first 2 and last 2. CO about 24 sts and practice it, and you'll see how it works.
