6 x 9 inch Rectangles for Charity

I found a link from a posting on this site so i thought I'd put it on this forum. The website is http://www.rectangle6x9.org/

They ask people to create 6inch by 9 inch blocks. Every 2-3 months they get a group of volunteers togethor to sew 49 of these blocks togethor to make Afgans. Then they deliver them to military hospitals. They have delivered over 1,000 Afgans there site says. They even made it on Fox News. There's a link to the article on their homepage in the top right corner.

The best thing about it is that there's no way I could make an entire blanket by myself and making 6 x 9 inch blocks is perfect.

I have also made rectangles for this organization. The blankets get distributed all over the US and overseas as well. This project is near and dear to me as I have a son in the Air Force. There is no minimum amount to send either as they appreciate each rectangle that arrives.

To our Rectangle Makers ... thought it would be fun to throw a challenge out there for everyone making 6”x9” rectangles for our March Put Together Event…. here it is:

I challenge you to make one rectangle using a new stitch!

It can be a combination that is different than you’ve done before. Like something other than garter like a basket weave
for our advanced people - add a cable or a heart into the pattern

So ….. will you take my challenge and if so…. what stitch will YOU be trying?

Thank you for the afghans. I have a great story.....Our hospitality cart was giving items to the soldiers last week and there was a WWII veteran / patient. Our volunteer gave him a red/white/blue afghan, the gentleman pulled it up to his chin and started crying, he then began talking with our volunteer for the next hour. When our volunteer left, the family followed and told the volunteer that the gentleman had not spoken at all over the last two weeks. There is so much love in those blankets!

There are no words that can express our thanks!
