help me understand the directions

I'm new to this site and a newby to knitting. Well, I've done a few simple things.

Re: child's poncho

Here is what the pattern says to do: (I have CO of 42 st. )

Next row (RS): *(K1, M1) rep from * across (54, (63, 72). Change to larger 24" circ ndls, Beg with P row, work St st for 5 rows.

The size that I am doing would correlate to the 63 figure. I don't get what they are trying to tell me inorder to go from 42-63 sts. If I K1, M1 all the across it actually doubles the # of sts. Do I K1, M1 until I have 63 sts? What do I do with the remaining 21 sts? Finish the row off with just K?

Yes, somethings wrong there. could be a pattern error?
What I'd do is add another K1 to the formula, to get the correct number of sts evenly spaced.
like this
Next row (RS): *(K1, M1, K1) rep from * across (54, (63, 72).

They're using an incorrect term. You would k1, kfb, k1, kfb. Some people use M1 as a generic term for inc 1.
