HOW DO YOU KNIT A WELT???!!!
I'm knitting a baby bootie from the book Hats and Booties and the directions say "Welt". Then it tells me to slip a stitch from the left needle onto the right, go to the 3rd ridge and pick up the 1st loop in that ridge with right needle. Then it says, pass the slipped stitch over the loop that was picked up. My problem is: It doesn't tell you what to do with the original slipped stitch that you're putting over the new loop. Should it be dropped like when you bind off or should it be placed back in the left needle? I don't even have a clue of what a welt should look like! Can someone please help???!!!
Thank you very much,
happyknitting (not so happy right now)

my guess is you knit the stitch, then repeat.

what is a welt? well its sort of like a hem (do you know how to knit a hem) in the middle of a work.

1--how to knit a hem

cast on (use a provisional cast on.)

knit a few rows (stocking knit) on a needle 1 size smaller than for the rest of garment

make a turning row (usually a row of purl, or a "picot" (k1, *Yo, K2tog-repeated from * across row)

Switch to recommened/needle you get gauge with

knit a few rows.

then, undo provisional cast on (pick up the stitches) and fold hem.
(see turning row, above)
hold 2 needles in one hand, (left) and knit cast on edge together with 'real knitting'

Now, think about making a hem (or horizontal tuck) in your knitting.

you knit, to point X, then knit 3 (or some number) more rows.

then you "pick up the bump (from wrong side) of row X, and knit this stitch with the stitch on the needle

this can be done by passing the lifted stitch over the one on the needle and knitting only the picked up stitch,

or knitting the picked up stitch with the stitch on the needle...

or ....

well there are lots of ways.

when you are done, you'll have a welt in knitting.

the work will be shortened (if it was 1 inch long before the welt, then you knit another 1/4 of an inch, after the welt is done it will be 1 inch + 1row. (and you'll have an 1/8 inch welt (the 1/4 inch of knitting will be folded in half making a welt.

look at photo of the work, do you see a ridge? the ridge is the welt.

Troy, thanks for your response. But do you mean put the slipped stitch back on the left needle and knit it?

No, the directions clearly state that you pass the slipped st over the loop you pick up. It's like passing a stitch over the other when you bind off or dec like a slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (skp) direction.
