HALP! Bag straps? What?!?

I'm trying this pattern, and hit a snag as soon as I started.

"With one spool of soutache, CO 7 sts for one strap ; with another spool of soutache, CO 7 sts for 2nd strap. Work both straps at the same time with the separate spools."

I'm completely confused. How do I do this? Spool? Knit both at once? Whaaaat?

Spool = ball. So CO 7sts with a yarn end and CO another 7 sts with a separate yarn end. Then knit across each one, dropping the separate yarn strands and picking up the other when you come to the middle.

Yep. You would work it all the way across all 14 sts, but split, using one strand for the first 7 and the other for the 2nd strand.

yes. use one ball of yarn for the 1st 7 stitches, drop that pick up 2nd yarn and knit the other 7 stitches, turn work and work the 7 stitches you just finished working, drop that yarn pick up the other yarn and work the other 7 stitches. Keep working back and forth as pattern calls for.

If you're still confused, you can just knit each strap separately.
The reasons for doing both at the same time is (a) they're guaranteed to be the same length and (b) you're less likely to bore yourself to death.

They say "spool" rather than "ball" because that's the way some soutache is packaged -- it's not a spun yarn but a thin cord.
