SO frustrated!

So, I'm making the Cigar Gloves from Knitty. This is my first pair of gloves, and I am stuck, stuck stuck. I have my gloves knit to about here: (those first two rows are the beginning of the thumb)

The index finger is done and bound off. The pinky, thumb, and middle part are live stitches on waste yarn. I'm now to the part where I need to shape the middle finger, and these are the directions given:
pick up and k 2 sts in CO sts from index finger, k 5 sts on one side of hand next to index finger, CO 2, k 6 sts on other side of hand next to index finger, join to work in the round.

Okay- so I don't have a tail of yarn anymore, since I just bound off the index finger. So, I get that I need to pick up 2 sts from the CO sts in the bottom of the index finger, but I don't know how, or which direction. Basically, when I pick them up right to left, then I knit 5 stitches, well, now I'm doing reverse stockinett. I could just purl, but I want to get it right. Also- where the heck do I attach the new yarn to? I'm so frustrated with this! Can anyone please please provide some insight?

When I do fingers, I just grab a new yarn end for each finger, not sure if there is another way Then I'm not exactly connecting the new yarn to anything, just picking up and knitting with it, if that makes sense

As for which direction - I almost always do the first finger wrong and have to go back and reverse directions seems my fingers get knit a few times each So if the way you went didn't work, go the other way is my advice

Can you pick up stitches the other way though?

^^^^^ <-so, this is the index finger- I pick them up from the side ,
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ (left to right, can you do it R to L?) &
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ then I have a needle in the bold sts on both
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ sides. Do I pick up from the index finger
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ and then just start knitting on one of
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ the needles there? I'm so confused
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ that now my questions aren't even making sense!

To start new yarn, insert needle, loop yarn over needle and pull through st as you would knit. the loose end is woven in later.
& this is how i'd do the next finger. index finger sitting to bottom.
1. pick up 2st right to left along base of index.
2 knit 5 sts
3. cast on 2 sts, cable cast on left to right.
4. knit 5 sts
now join and knit rounds.
